Location
Built into the motte towards the SW of the lake.
History
The mound originated as a Bronze Age burial cairn which was enlarged as a castle motte in the C11. It formed the nucleus of the original estate of Rug, and the first house was built beside it. The ice house was constructed in 1878, and it was during the associated excavation work that the Bronze Age origins of the mound were discovered.
Exterior
The chamber is approached via a straight passage which has stone external retaining walls and a brick arched ceiling.
Reason for designation
The mound is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Ref. Me 19.
