History
Pair of early C19 cottages, formerly the Navigation Inn.
Exterior
Red brick in Flemish bond, with hipped tiled roof. Two storeys and atics, each cottage of 1 bay but two rooms deep. Six-panelled doors in panelled doorcases, each with flat canopy on console brackets. Sixteen-paned sashes with stone sills and slightly cambered 22cm rubbed brick heads. The S elevation of Varchoel Villa also has 16-paned sashes to each floor of each bay, the panes being square in proportion, and an inserted casement window at the centre. Dentilled brick eaves. Stack on party wall at centre. Lean-to outbuilding to No.2, now garage, with a loft on the N (road) elevation. N wall is of stone.
Reason for designation
Included as a largely unaltered example of a pair of early C19 cottages.
