History

Exterior
Coal mining began in the area around Bagillt in the Mid C18. Bettisfield Colliery, located on the edge of the marshes next to the railway, was established in the mid C19, and operated until the mid C20. Lamp room probably built circa 1880's. The lamproom is single storey gabled building in red brick with a slate roof. There is a short brick chimney stack at the SW end, and a raised ventilator at the centre. The front elevation, to the SE, has three segmental arched windows, all currently blocked, and a doorway. The roof eaves are brought deep across the front of the building and supported by timber posts to provide a sheltered queueing area for miners collecting their lamps. Listed for group value with the adjacent winding engine house and as a rare surviving example of a former colliery lamproom.
