Description

History
One of a number of Gwydir estate cottages built by Lord Willoughby de Eresby c.1845 and conceived in a characteristic and highly stylised pseudo-vernacular style. This estate style represents a fusion between the Tudorbethan popularly employed in this context, and a Picturesque historicising style, ultimately dependant on such earlier examples as the Ty-Hyll, or `Ugly House' near Capel Curig.

Exterior
One-and-a-half storey 2-window cottage with extensions to the rear, forming an plan. Constructed of rough-dressed slate-stone blocks under a graded iron-rich slate roof with deep verges and eaves, the latter with characteristic shaped corbelling, diagonally-set at the corners, and the former of large slate slab construction. Round, projecting end chimney to the W gable; of 2 stages with a cylindrical stack with plain cornice and louvre. Near-centre entrance with slightly-recessed boarded and studded door and flanking mullioned windows, 3 lights to the L and 2 to the R; wooden mullions with C20 leaded glazing. 2 later gabled rubble dormers to roof with 2-light leaded windows as before and plain modern bargeboards. 2-light window to L of stack projection on W gable and single-light windows to the E gable on both ground and upper floors, the latter with triangular-arched head. Gabled rear wing set back slightly at the NW, with plain end chimney with louvre to gable; this appears to be a later C19 addition to the original 2-window rectangular block of the primary cottage. Gabled dormer as before to W face with ground-floor window at L. Further plain chimney at NW corner. Stepped-down and adjoining to the N a further gabled extension, single-storey and with 2-light window to the W face. Single-storey lean-to projection to L at rear.

Interior
The interior was not inspected at the time of survey (February 1996).

Reason for designation
A mid C19 estate cottage of characteristic design.
