Period

History
Early C19 stable range probably contemporary with the house, 1828, extended and altered in late C19.

Exterior
Stable court with cobbled yard and ranges on three sides, and a fourth range running N from the W end of the courtyard N range. This N range appears to have been the first built, of greenish squared stone, the outward-facing N side of seven bays with alternate doors and windows, the centre door under a wider elliptical arch that is apparently decorative only. Stone voussoirs to arch and heads of doors and windows. Stone sills. Raised plinth. Windows have late C19 glazing: small-paned top halves, 2-pane lower halves. Doors are boarded with 4-pane overlights. The roof is hipped at left angle and has two square louvred ventilators with ogee lead caps. The coach-house at right angles is of similar build with big depressed-arched coach entry, with boarded doors, flanked by small-paned lunettes under eaves. Tooled stone voussoirs and quoins. Roof hipped to right. Attached at right corner is a late C19 or early C20 glazed hipped coach-washing shelter on iron columns. The courtyard to rear of the N range has mostly late C19 detail, most openings framed in black brick with thick tile sills. Rear, of rougher rubble stone, has original elliptical-arched coach-entry to left with circular pitching eye over. Another two similar pitching eyes to centre and left over two wide-spaced windows and a door, all with cut stone voussoirs and black brick jambs. The E side of the courtyard has an elliptical-arched throughway to left, centre gable with later C19 boarded loft opening over two openings with stone voussoirs and brick jambs, a window to left and a door to right, and further right is another window. A straight joint by left window shows that right range is added. Similar louvred ventilator on roof. Rear of this range has the straight joint to left of the throughway, then two later C19 windows and a black-brick elliptical-arched coach entry to left. Roof is hipped at left angle. The S side of the courtyard has a range shorter than that on N with hipped W end and part-blocked elliptical-arched coach entry facing into courtyard, and one late C19 window in end wall.

Interior
Interior retains many internal fittings: stalls, tethering-posts, tackrooms, doors.

Reason for designation
Included for its special interest as a well-preserved earlier and late C19 stable complex, of group value with Ffrwdgrech House.
