Group of five tombs S of the tower of the Church of St Cynwyd

The tombs are set approximately end to end immediately S of the tower and S wall at the W end of the nave of the church, and adjacent to the path to the S door.  

Religious, Ritual and Funerary  

 

Five graveyard monuments, comprising 4 chest tombs and one railed slab, all of the late C18 and early C19.  

The group comprises, from the W: (a) A sandstone chest with recessed wide corner pilasters, a chamfered base and a moulded ledger slab. Inscribed on the side to David Treharne, of Pentre Farm, Ystrad Dyfodwg, d.1860 aged 18; (b) sandstone chest with slender end pilasters, chamfered top and side panels with fan corners, inscribed on top to Edwd Thomas of Nant-y-llyn, d. 1760, William Thomas, d. 1833, and others. (c) A plain ashlar sandstone chest with a moulded ledger slab, inscribed to Elizabeth, daughter of Hopkin and Elizabeth Lloyd of Penm..... d. 1761 (?); (d) Ledger slab enclosed in early C19 iron railings with trefoil heads and square corner stanchions, and pointed gadrooned finials, to Elias Jenkins of Henrdre Owen, d.1814, Lewis Jenkins, brother, added 1826; (e) Low chest tomb with wide corner balusters and slightly hipped moulded capstone, to (illegible Welsh legend), d.1856, and addition of 1858 in English; and (f) a scrolled marble headstone with kerb, to Myfanwy Lloyd of Porthcawl, d.1930, included to complete the group.  

 

Included as a group of good late C18 or early C19 monuments, of group value with the church of St Cynwyd.
