Summary Description of a Listed Buildings
Date of Designation
08/09/1998
Date of Amendment
30/09/1999
Name of Property
Ionic Column on former East Drive
Unitary Authority
Gwynedd
Location
Situated in the middle of the former east drive on the hill immediately to north of the fountain at the end of the east vista.
History
C19 garden feature. If the east drive was just a ride and not intended for vehicles, and if the drive dates from the 1830's when the boundary wall and lodges were being built, then this column is likely to be primary to the drive. If however this drive was intended for vehicles the column must post-date the time when it had fallen out of use as the position of the column would make it impassable to traffic. The Ionic style of the column reflects the work associated with the 1830's and 1840's improvements and rebuilding of the house and so it is more probable that this column is of that date.
Glynllifon was the seat of the Wynn family and Sir Thomas John Wynn became the 1st Lord Newborough in 1776. The house was rebuilt after a fire 1836-48 by Edward Haycock, architect of Shrewsbury. This statue is possibly Italian as the Newboroughs are known to have brought back many items from their Grand Tours.
Exterior
Ionic marble column with square base, cylindrical column. Above its cornice is an enormous ovoid finial on stem.
Reason for designation
Included for group value with other listed structures within these well-preserved pleasure grounds at Glynllifon.
