Location
The L shaped group of cottages stands at the junction where the road between Talybont and Pencelli adjacent to the canal meets the road to Aberclydach; partly fronts a small lane linking the two roads
History
Formerly a group of 4 or 5 cottages c 1740. Refurbished in 1929; the downpipes are dated and lettering JLM refers to Morgan, the family of David Morgan the Cardiff retailer. Now divided into 3 dwellings, numbers 1, 3 and 5. Earlier name Derwen y Groes; Tithe Apportionment 1841 refers to Public House and Cottages, this property being the Inn. Dated bottles retained by owner.
Exterior
At the junction of the L shaped range comprising 3 cottages (formerly 4 or 5) facing N and E. This property comprises former number 3 at the E end of the N range and former number 4 at the N end of the E range. Number 3 was the largest house in the group. Of colourwashed roughcast stone rubble with Welsh slate roof with swept eaves and corniced coursed stone end stack to left, and another wide and shared to right. Two storeys, attic, and cellar. 3 window range of 6/6 pane sashes with shallow sills, central doorway with 6 panelled door and rectangular overlight, keystones to openings. Gable end facing road has windows at attic and cellar level. Former number 4 has single storey and attic, two window range of segmental arched latticed metal-framed casements to dormers and ground floor either side of similarly arched central doorway with stable-type boarded door.
Interior
Interior not inspected at time of survey (23rd October 1997).
Reason for designation
Included together with numbers 1 and 5 as part of a picturesque group of cottages of C18 origin.
