Location
Located between the former slate mill to the north-east and the quarry offices to the south-west on Level VI (Bonc yr Offis) of Pen-yr-Orsedd Slate Quarry.
History
Store building, c1863. The quarry opened c1816 when it was worked by William Turner. In 1863 it was bought by W A Darbishire & Co., after which it underwent substantial modernisation, reflected in the use of both water and steam power. During the 1890s about 450 men worked here; it finally closed in 1997.
Exterior
Constructed of squared and coursed rubble with gable-ended graded slate roof. Long narrow building aligned approximately north-west to south-east. North-west (left) end has 4-bay open front with square piers and south-east end is former office with 4 tall rectangular window openings, some still with timber casements. Doorway in gable end.
Interior
Tie beam roof trusses.
Reason for designation
Listed as part of the remarkably complete quarry complex at Pen-yr-Orsedd Slate Quarry, forming a group with other structures on Level VI, also important as one of the first structures erected during the quarry's modernisation after change of ownership in 1863.
