Description

Broad Class
Industrial
Period

History
Probably built soon after 1817, when the Llanelly Wharf on the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal was completed. The kiln was supplied by coal and limestone brought in via the Clydach Railroad, the burnt or slaked lime exported via the canal for agriculture and building.

Exterior
Very long block of limekilns built into bank alongside canal. Rubble construction, with continuous stringcourse above drawing-arches. Drawing-arches are paired, having round-arched heads with stone voussoirs. Two pairs to left, and then to right is a round-arched doorway into a dog-leg stone stair leading to the loading stage. To right of doorway is another pair of drawing-arches. Stone vaults, some obscured by spoil. Deep retaining side walls. Top stage much overgrown.

Interior

Reason for designation
Listed as particularly impressive early C19 block of limekilns, a rare industrial survival; group value with Auckland House, the latter also a rare and early industrial survival, being among the first railway warehouses in the world, built 1819-22.
