A tomb in the neo-classical/baroque manner which might be C18 but is probably early C19 as the other memorials around it. Restored 2012/3.
Exterior
Sarcophagus of white limestone ashlar in the shape of a wine cooler standing on a larger plinth. Each face of the plinth has a sunk panel and the corners project diagonally and each support a large volute. The rim of the sarcophagus has egg-and-dart moulding and its coped lid is surmounted by a large fluted boss. The uphill, south-western face, has a brass plaque added in the recent restoration commissioned by Tintern Community Council, and it records the previously eroded inscription. The plaque reads:
Richard White son of George White of New Weir in the County of Hereford Gent. Died October 30th 1765 aged 67 years whose amiable temper and hospitality called to the sequestered spot many of the first rank and character. Inoffensive and benevolent he lived without an enemy and died deplored by all.
