Description

Broad Class
Transport
Period

History
The enclosure wall to the churchyard is likely to date from the remaking of the roadway. This roadway could be as early as the late C18 but the lack of wear suggests a later date and it is probably early C19. This was the road up to Penterry and St Arvans and was one of the main accesses from Chepstow before the valley turnpike was opened in 1829.

Exterior
Rubble retaining wall to churchyard about 3m in height which decreases as the road reaches the churchyard gate. Adjoining roadway paved with limestone setts running uphill from Chapel Lane to the Church of St Mary on Chapel Hill. It is about 3m in width and approximately 300m in length. The top 100m runs parallel with the churchyard and the paving seems to peter out almost immediately after passing the church.

Interior

Reason for designation
Included as a churchyard wall retaining its character flanked by a particularly good (probably) early C19 paved road which survives in unaltered condition.
