Location
In the centre of Grosmont, some 40m N of St Nicholas's Church. Shop and adjoining house are to S of road.
History
A building with C17 origins, substantially rebuilt in the early C19 to form a shop and house.
Exterior
Whitewashed rubble; C20 tile roof, brick stacks. Shop and small house form two storey range. First floor has four 12-pane sash windows; thin stone sills. Ground floor has (l to r) 16-pane sash, 6-panel door, 3+12+3 pane canted bay window, C20 door to shop and similar canted bay on right.
Interior
Ground floor of shop has deeply chamfered ceiling beams with hollow and fillet (Wern-hir) stops. Fixed to ceiling are C19 metal plates with pendant hooks, formerly used for hanging paraffin lamps. Ground floor entry to adjoining house is into entrance passage with rear service rooms (ahead), 6-panel door to living room (left), and C19 stair (right). First floor has large open landing around stair well, adjoining back corridor retains lateral brick fireplace.
Reason for designation
Well-preserved early C19 village shop. Important group value with St Nicholas's Church and other listed buildings in centre of Grosmont.
