Description

Broad Class

Period

History
A probably early C17 two unit, gable entry farmhouse; enlarged in later C17 when a two storey extension was added at uphill end. During C19 there was some refenestration but since then there have been very few changes and the farmhouse retains a strong historic character. At the time of resurvey (September 1999) the building was unoccupied.

Exterior
Substantial two storey farmhouse. Rubble stone; slate roof with centre rendered stack. NW front faces farmyard. Early C17 house (to left) has, on ground floor (l to r); small 2-light window with iron stanchion and inner shutter; then a diamond mullion (former 6-light window) which has three surviving beaded mullions in centre flanked by iron stanchions, and internal shutters; next is ruined wall of former external stone stair; and then the entrance doorway, plank door with strap hinges. First floor has (l to r) C18 metal casement with timber lintel and stone sill; next a small square opening with timber lintel and metal casement; then a boarded loft door (formerly reached by stone stair). A vertical break in the masonry separates the later C17 addition (to right). On ground floor is a 3+3 pane casement; then a stone tiled lean- to (former cider house), which has plank and batten door with ‘trident' strap hinges. On first floor are a 4+4 pane casement and a 3+3 casement. SW gable has C19 4-pane horned sash in gable head, similar window on first floor with angled dripstone and stone sill, and on ground floor a barred window with angled dripstone (left) and a window which has an 8-pane casement (left), a centre mullion, and a 12-pane sash (right). Rear elevation faces SE. Later C17 addition (to left) has big lateral chimney stack with moulded cap and rectangular stone flue. First floor has C19 4-pane horned sash with segmental arch. Ground floor C19 4-panel door and (to right) tall 3-light window with segmental arch. Centre wall has small square stair windows with voussoired arches on ground and first floor. Early C17 house (to right) first floor, has C17 transom and then a C20 window; ground floor, a 1+1 casement, then a boarded door. Attached to the rear wall are two slate-roofed lean-to additions; attached to the NE gable is a lofted stable block.

Interior
Entry into stone-flagged hall of early C17 house. Ceiling beams have roll moulding with angle bead. Broad fireplace opening with C19 kitchen range. Adjoining dairy has chamfered ceiling beams with straight cut stops. To right of entry is C17 doorway with Tudor arched head and quarter roll moulding to jamb; plank and batten door with strap hinges and applied fillets. Ground floor of later C17 addition has complex Rennaissance moulding to ceiling beams: a hollow inserted between two rolls (see Fox and Raglan III p 48). Above fireplace, the face of ceiling beam has semi-circular recess said to tread-wheel of dog turnspit. Fireplace in adjoining parlour has a late C18 forest pattern hob grate. First floor chamber (directly above) has a early C18 fireplace surround has egg and dart moulded architrave. Adjoining lobby with in and out partition. Second bedroom has bolection moulded fireplace surround and cupboards each side. Attic has centre stack; roof of four bays on each side; collar trusses with three rows of purlins.

Reason for designation
Included as a well-preserved C17 farmhouse with several good interior features.
