Set into the west boundary wall of Chepstow Racecourse (Piercefield Park) about 1200m north of the junction of the A466 and the B4293.

The western boundary wall of Piercefield Park was built in 1794 at which time the turnpike from Chepstow to St. Arvans village and Devauden was already in place, having been constructed in 1760 to move the public road further from the house. These gates are said to date from 1833 and to be an improvement associated with the then owner Nathaniel Wells. The gateway is directly opposite to the entrance to Oakgrove, which was the dower house of Piercefield, but that house would appear to date from a few years after Middle Lodge and the Gates. The gatepiers are sandstone ashlar, square in section with a small base and a heavy modillion cornice cap. The capstone comes to a slight point to throw off the weather. Wrought iron spear double gates with a flat top rail. The gateway is joined to the lodge by a short section of park wall about 2.25m in height.  

 

Included as mid C19 park gates which are a significant component of the nationally important historic landscape of Piercefield Park and for their group value with the adjacent Middle Lodge.
