History
This house may well be C17 in origin as is suggested by the batter on the lower walls and the uneven distribution of the windows, but the overall character is now probably early C19 when it had a full refurbishment. If it is C17 it would probably have been raised from one-and-a-half storeys but there is no particular sign of this visible in the stonework. Externally the house has not changed in appearance since the mid C19. The improvements are probably the work of the Beaufort estate which took over Monkswood from Tintern Abbey in the mid C16 and held it until 1899.

Exterior
The house is wholly painted over local rubble stone, Welsh slate roof with red brick chimneys. L-shaped plan with an in-line extension of the main range at the corner of the L. The main elevation has 3 + 1 bays, with the entrance central to the three bay part. This has a part-glazed panelled door with a Victorian tented porch with ogee heads. This is flanked by 3-light timber casements arranged unevenly. The first floor has three 3-light casements as before arranged evenly with wide stretches of wall to either end. Steeply pitched roof with two gabled dormers with 2 + 2 pane casements and gable stacks. To the right of this is an extension with a small 2 + 2 casement below and a 3-light one as before above, large stack external to the end wall. There is a rear wing to the main range, the ridge of which can be seen from the front. This is one bay and has a door and a chimney to the entrance front, rear not seen.

Interior
Interior not available for inspection at resurvey (November 2000).

Reason for designation
Included as a probably two period farmhouse which retains good external character.
