Description

History
Probably built in the early C19 and shown on the 1829 town plan as a house. The lower storey was converted to a shop in the C19 and was a butcher's shop in 1886 and an ironmongery by 1910.

Exterior
A 3-storey 4-bay house and shop of scribed render front, slate roof and end roughcast stacks. The shop front is late C20, and has double panel doors L of centre under an overlight, and 5 round-headed lights to the shop window on the R, all beneath a plain fascia. On the L side is a 2-storey bow window, with plain glazing in the lower storey, wider and projecting on brackets in the middle storey with 2-pane sashes. Windows in the middle and upper storeys are grouped 3+1. In the middle storey are three 16-pane sash windows in moulded architraves, and in the upper storey sash windows of 12 panes. The rear has hornless sash windows, inserted and replacement windows, and 2 doors in the upper storey with escape stairs.

Interior
Modernised interior, originally of double-depth plan. The rear has an open-well stair with wreathed handrail.

Reason for designation
Listed for its special architectural interest as an early C19 former house retaining original character and detail notwithstanding alteration to its shop front, and for its contribution to the historical integrity of Castle Street.
