Description

Broad Class
Domestic
Period

History
Kinmel Park was designed for Hughes (of Parys Mines) by the architect W E Nesfield, in 1870. The gatepiers appear contemporary with those of Nesfield''s famous ''''Golden Lodge'''' to the north of the house, and by inference date from c1868. The original ironwork is wholly or mostly lost.

Exterior
The gateway consists of a row of 6 square stone piers increasing in height to the centre; the main piers are about 4m high. They have 2 fielded sunk panels at front and an elaborate top consisting of a string course all round with sunk faces, a key design frieze above, and a cornice with a capping of moulded pyramid form. (This is similar, but not identical, to the design of the Golden Lodge gatepiers). The mid-piers each side are in related style, about 3m high. The outer piers are plain apart from a string course and about 2m high. The gates at centre are in wrought iron but are evidently a poor replacement of the lost original gates. The middle bays of iron railings are also not original, but the railings in the outer bays possibly are original.

Interior

Reason for designation
Gatepiers and possibly some remaining ironwork to the design of W E Nesfield; listed also for group value with Kinmel Park and the Golden Lodge.
