Description

Broad Class

Period

History
Said to date from c.1800-1810. The lychgate was originally at the churchyard entrance but although isolated when the churchyard was enlarged to the west in 1910 it was retained. It is evident that the building originally had gates to protect the churchyard. A window in the south side was blocked up at the same time. The lychgate was restored in 1981.

Exterior
A fine vernacular lychgate of the pre-ecclesiological period in axe-dressed stone with a simple slate roof on exposed timbering. Simple rounded arches to front and rear.

Interior
Well-laid cobbled floor defined by a stone sill each end; timber side benches.

Reason for designation
A fine plain lychgate of the simplest character, enhancing the setting of the church notwithstanding the loss of gates and the removal of the adjacent churchyard wall.
