Description

Broad Class

Period

History
A small farm on the slopes of the valley of Afon Braint. Mainly early C19, though the earlier dwelling and its attendant farm buildings are linked by an extension to the house of later C19 date. Other farmbuildings on the site suggest an independent, albeit small, holding.

Exterior
Comprises a linear range of house with lofted cartshed adjoining to its left, and a low cow-house attached to the right. The house is built in two distinct phases, with the earliest section to the left. All lime-rendered rubble construction, with grouted slate roofs (though part of the cow-house roof has been renewed). Original dwelling comprises a 2-unit, one and a half-storeyed range with end chimneys, that to left larger: off-central entrance with boarded door, flanked by 16-pane sash windows: 12-pane sashes aligned above, breaking through the eaves in catslide dormers. Its higher addition to the right is a single bay (perhaps once a separate dwelling) with doorway to the left, and 4-pane sash on each floor to its right. Gable end stack. Single storey cow-house range beyond to the right, perhaps built in two phases (the roof is clearly divided into two sections by slated copings), with 3 simple doorways. Cart shed beyond the original house has timber lintel over boarded door.

Interior
Interior not inspected at the time of the survey.

Reason for designation
Listed as an intact linear farmstead range with little alteration to its traditional character - in scale and plan, in constructional detail and finish, the building is a good example of a small farmstead in regional vernacular character.
