History
The 'Battlement Walk' appears to incorporate some old, possibly medieval structure, though its present form is possibly a garden feature of the early C17 at a period when raised walks were popular for viewing the parterres as well as for wider views without the enclosed gardens. The 'Watchtower' is probably an early/mid C19 structure, dating probably from the same period as the earlier of the terraces below. It is shown on the estate plan of c1855.

Exterior
The 'Battlement Walk' is a high wall of stone rubble with battlements and a parapet walk. This extends north-westwards as far as the 'Watchtower', which is built of stone and has a parapet on northern, southern and western sides similar to the terrace parapets. The western wall is pierced by ventilators; there is a ground floor doorway and external stone stair rising up from the wall walk on the eastern side and forming on the western side a small turret in the angle between the wall walk and the south wall of the tower. The 'Battlement Walk' is pierced at its southern end by an arch with cambered head.
