Situated in the centre of Cwmbelan village on the S side of the main street, now by-passed by the A470.  

 

 

A 2-unit 2-storey cottage, probably C18, later converted to a public house. The front was probably rebuilt in the C19 in small-scantling close-studding, a rear lean-to stable probably contemporary. There was a smithy against the W end, in the form of a lean-to. The building reverted to domestic use in the 1970s.  

Two-storey 2-unit cottage with lobby-entrance to R end and irregular arrangement of windows. The front is plastered and rendered over small-scantling close-studding on a plinth; E gable end is box-panelled, the panelling 4 tiers high with no evidence that the roof has been raised. Slate roof, stone end stack to R, and small stone eaves stack to L of centre to front. The entrance contains a boarded door within a wooden doorcase. To the L are small-pane wooden windows with fine glazing bars, mainly 2-light casements. The ground floor has 3 windows; 1st floor has 2 windows not aligned with those below. The E gable end has 2 small C20 wooden casements to each floor, within the box-panelling. The rear wall is of brick, with lean-to stable, recently weather-boarded over small-scantling close-studding. It has a wooden casement to E side, rear not seen. Against the W end is a stone lean-to which housed the former smithy. Its front entrance has old split doors with carved initials, under a segmental brick head.  

Inside the lobby entrance is the hall, the large stone fireplace with chamfered timber lintel. On the L side are winding timber stairs with plain narrow balusters, moulded handrail and a square newel post, slightly chamfered, with a rounded top. These are possibly C18, but there is a niche behind suggesting there was an earlier staircase. The ceiling has 2 spine beams with shallow chamfer and run-out stops, and plain joists which may be later. Smaller reception room to L, with similar spine beams to ceiling. Exposed timber-framing to front and side walls. Small-scantling close-studding is also exposed in the rear lean-to, now a service room. The W lean-to is supported by a half tie-beam truss. Upstairs, the 2 bedrooms are open to the roof, the partition between of small-scantling close-studding, but with evidence of alteration; to the L is part of a cambered beam, whilst a doorway cuts through the R side.  

Listed as a good C18 vernacular cottage retaining its character and external and internal detail, the attached smithy of additional interest.
