Description

Broad Class

Period

History
Probably c1870-80, apparently a single housing development comprising a terrace of workers' houses and a pair of more substantial middle-class villas. Nos 10 and 11 form the pair of villas and number 10 is part of the same build with the terrace. Number 11 (Bay View) may represent a slightly different phase of development, though closely linked to the rest.

Exterior
No 10 is rubble stone with brick dressings and slate roof. 2 storeyed with attics, 2-window range with wide gable slightly advanced to right. Left hand section has red-brick dressings; doorway at left - a 4-panelled door with overlight, with paired 4-pane sash windows alongside it under a single cambered head. 4-pane sash window above, and small dormer gable with decorative barge-boards and 4-pane sash window. Gable has yellow brick dressings including glazed moulded keys and sills, and stringcourse to first floor. 2x4-pane sash windows at ground floor, canted oriel above, and 4-pane sash with round-arched head at gable apex. No 11 is roughcast with slate roof and gable end stacks. 2 storeys with attic, 2-window range facing new street, with return elevation to garden. This has etiolated circular oriel window in gable with stained glass above the transom, and big overhanging cornice. Gabled dormers with fretted barge-bards and round-arched sash windows in attic storey, 4-pane sash windows with smooth stucco surrounds and sill band to first floor. Canted bay to right with detilled cornice and leaded roof. Door to left with overlight; panelled door with stained glass panels. Boundary wall is rubble with yellow-brick dressings and has segmental archway to left with boarded door with traceried overlight.

Interior
Not Inspected.

Reason for designation
Listed as a well-preserved C19 terrace built on a relatively large scale combining small urban houses with a pair of more substantial villas in a single development. Good retention of original detail throughout, including interesting use of local and imported building materials. The group is a particularly good example of later C19 urban housing of a type which now rarely survives unaltered, and is of particular interest in the context of the growth of Menai Bridge in this period.
