Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument, also known as Parc y Garreg or Trefaes Maenhir, is a well preserved broad and squat shaped standing stone probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 BC - 800 BC). It is located in pasture on a NE facing slope. It is set upright and firmly planted into the ground. It is 1.6m high and has an obliquely pointed top. The stone measures 0.9m thick and 1.4m wide. The long axis is oriented NW-SW. It enjoys good views to the NE and E.
The standing stone is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. Such standing stones are assumed to have had some form of religious or ceremonial function. It represents a notable element in the wider prehistoric and funerary landscape. The monument retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.
The area to be scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 6m in diameter.
