Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
A fine example of its type, this standing stone, also known as Y Garreg Hir, is located within an enclosed arable field on a gentle north facing slope overlooking Newport Bay. It probably dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 BC - 800 BC). The standing stone measures 1.6m tall, 1.2m wide and 0.5m deep. It has a blunt and rounded top and is oriented NNE-SSW. There is an earthfast packing stone visible at the base of the monument on its southern side.
The standing stone is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. It is an important local landmark and represents a notable element in the wider prehistoric and funerary landscape.
The area to be scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 3m in diameter.
