Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a large burial cairn, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC). It is located on the summit of Aran Fawddwy immediately adjacent to the top of an E facing 300m high cliff. The cairn enjoys excellent all-round views. The stone-built cairn is circular in shape on plan and measures c.16m in diameter. The cairn is flat-topped in profile and measures c.4m in height. The cairn material has not been disturbed or excavated. An Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar has been erected on the E side of the cairn.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 20m in diameter.
