Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument comprises a pair of standing stones, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The standing stones are located c. 300m apart on a NNW-SSE alignment in adjacent fields of pasture on a gentle NW-facing slope. The S standing stone (Item 'A') measures 1.65m in height, 1.15m in width and 0.75m in depth. It is aligned NE-SW. The N standing stone (Item 'B') measures 1.2m in height, 1.3m in width and 1.25m in depth. It is aligned NE-SW. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric ritual practices. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The importance of the monument is further enhanced by the group value formed by the association of the individual standing stones. The scheduled areas comprise the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. Area 'A' is centred on Item 'A' (NGR SN 30560 53058). Area 'B' is centred on Item 'B' (NGR SN 30418 53330). Both areas are circular and measure 6m in diameter respectively.
