Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of seven prehistoric cairns, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The cairns are located in rough pasture on the W and NW facing slopes of Bryngwyn Bach and together form a cairn cemetery.
All the cairns are circular or oval in shape on plan. Cairn 'A' measures 7m in diameter (centred on NGR SN 72843 62818) and 0.35m in height. Cairn 'B' measures 9m in diameter (centred on NGR SN 72816 62817) and 0.45m in height. Cairn 'C' measures 10m in diameter (centred on NGR SN 72814 62834) and 0.6m in height. Cairns 'A' to 'C' feature exposed cists. Cairns 'A' and 'B' also feature upright stone settings. Cairns 'D' and 'E' are located c. 75m to the N and down slope. Cairn 'D' measures 6.5m in diameter (centred on NGR SN 72847 62834) and 0.35m in height. Cairn 'E' measures 7m in diameter (centred on NGR SN 72820 62913) and 0.35m in height. Cairns 'F' and 'G' form a discrete pair c. 200m to the ENE. Cairn 'F' measures 6m in diameter (centred on NGR SN 73029 62943) and 0.5m in height. Cairn 'G' measures 5m in diameter (centred on NGR SN 73014 62940) and 0.4m in height. The bulk of each cairn remains intact and well defined.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are important relics of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The importance of the monument is further enhanced by the group value formed by the association of the individual cairns within the cemetery.
The scheduled areas comprise the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
