Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a small round cairn, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC). It is situated on a local summit of a NW-SE aligned ridge known as Y Gribin in an area of unimproved upland grazing. The small burial cairn is circular in shape on plan and measures about 5m in diameter and a maximum of 0.5m in height on the SE (downslope) side. The cairn has been disturbed in the past and a cist exposed. The stone built cist is aligned N-S and measures 2m in length, 1.3m in width and 0.6m in depth.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of structural and environmental evidence, together with intact ritual deposits.
The area scheduled comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 20m in diameter.
