Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a longhut and associated enclosure, which probably dates to the late medieval or post-medieval periods. It is situated within unenclosed moorland on flat ground at the head of a shallow S-facing valley. The longhut is rectangular in shape on plan and measures 10m in length NW-SE by 3m transversely. The collapsed walls are built from stone rubble and measure a maximum of 0.8m in height and 2m in width. The longhut features entrance jambs set into the SW wall. The longhut is attached to the inner NE side of an irregular shaped enclosure, which measures 21m in length (N-S) by 16m. The enclosure walls measure a maximum of 1m in height and 1.2m in thickness and features facing stone in places.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval and post-medieval land use, settlement and economy. It is well preserved and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, layout, building techniques and functional detail. The importance of the site is further enhanced by its association with a similar monument nearby (BR408).
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular in shape on plan and measures 35m in diameter. It is centred on NGR SN 96137 13646.
