Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a stone-built enclosure, which is part of a much more extensive field system that probably dates to the prehistoric period. The enclosure lies at the junction of three relict field boundaries on the N, E and SW sides. It is situated within an area of upland rough grazing on a moderate S-facing slope above the Afon Hepste valley to the SE. The enclosure is D-shaped on plan and measures 31m NNW-SSE by 28m WNW/ESE. The perimeter wall survives as a large band of stone rubble that measures a maximum of 1m in height and 4m in width. The simple entrance measures 1.5m in width and is located on the NW side. The interior has been levelled.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric land use, settlement and economy. It is well preserved and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, layout, building techniques and functional detail.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular in shape on plan and measures 40m in diameter. It is centred on NGR SN 96281 13402
