Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument comprises the remains of a settlement enclosure, which probably dates to the prehistoric period. It is situated within an area of upland rough grazing on a river terrace between the Afon Hepste to the W and the W flank of Cefn Esgair-carnau to the E. The enclosure is sub-oval in shape and measures 25m in length (N-S) by 20m transversely. The perimeter wall survives as a turf-consolidated line of dry stone walling that measures a maximum of 0.5m in height and 2m in width. The entrance is located on the E side. Attached to the inner face of the N side of the enclosure are the collapsed remains of a stone-built hut circle, which measures 4.5m in diameter. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric land use, settlement and economy. It is well preserved and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, layout, building techniques and functional detail. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular in shape on plan and measures 35m in diameter. It is centred on NGR SN 97616 14130.
