Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an unenclosed settlement, which probably dates to the prehistoric period. It is located on the lower northern valley slopes of Cwm Cadlan within a boulder-strewn karst landscape. The widespread coaxial field system of low spread and discontinuous fugitive banks (Items A and B) is interspersed with an enclosure (Item C), three hut circles (Items D, E and F) and numerous stone built cairns. Each hut circle is defined by a circular or oval shaped stony bank.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement organisation and agricultural practices, particularly as the settlement and agricultural evidence are juxtaposed. The site is well preserved and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, layout, building techniques and functional detail. Paleoenvironmental evidence may also survive.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and the area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is roughly rectangular in shape on plan and measures 810m ENE-WSW by 400m transversely.
