Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a standing stone, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). At the time of the scheduling visit in 2001 this stone stood c.0.7m high, by c.0.3m wide and c.0.1m thick, tapering to c.0.08m by 0.06m at the top, with the long axis aligned north-south. It was previously recorded as stone 2 of a three-stone setting, though stones 1 and 3 were not seen. By 2005 the stone had been removed from its original position and was said to have been used by off-roaders to provide hardcore at the bottom of a rut.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. Its original position is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. Standing stones are often part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
