Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a well preserved unenclosed hut group settlement that probably dates to the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400). It is an unusually complete example comprising at least five small hut circles and two paddock enclosures. The huts are of particular interest in that at least two examples appear to be two-celled structures. The settlement is set on the gentle south-west facing slope at the foot of Moelfre, in an area of upland pasture, and the layout of the settlement can be seen clearly. The settlement is also important because of its locational association with the broadly contemporary fortified settlement at Craig y Dinas about 1km to the SSE.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric domestic construction practices. The monument retains significant archaeological potential and there is a strong probability that structural evidence has survived, together with internal and external floor surfaces.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
