Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of a linear earthwork, a substantial bank and ditch forming a major boundary between two adjacent landholdings. The dyke is thought to be of early medieval date. Its bank is 4.5m wide and 1.5m high, running for a distance of 200m south-west to north-east across a ridge. The front face may once have been revetted. The north-east half of the dyke has a secondary bank about 12m from it on the outer side of the ditch. The secondary bank is about 2m wide and 0.5m high.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric/medieval defensive oranisation and settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A linear earthwork may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
