Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the particularly well preserved and complete remains of a substantial, stone-built enclosed homestead of the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c. 800 BC - AD 400). The massive enclosure wall surrounds an oval interior which contains a single large hut, partly built into the N enclosure wall. There are indications of old field walls nearby which maybe associated. The site is broadly contemporary with other settlements in the vicinity.
The monument is a type of site common in Meirionnydd but rarely found at such low altitude. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement practices. It is an important relic of the prehistoric landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of environmental and structural evidence, including preserved internal and external floor levels. Its low-lying and poorly drained location suggest that organic material may survive. Its value is further increased by the group value with the other broadly contemporary settlements in the vicinity.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
