Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
A burial cairn, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2,300BC - 800BC). It is located approximately 930m NW of Tai Pellaf, 1.4km SW of Llwyn Saint and approximately 35m NW of the road between Gwytherin and Llanrwst on the lower S slopes of Ffrith Uchaf. Its diameter is 7m NW-SE and height 0.6m but its profile has been mutilated by an incomplete trench cut through from SW-NE, 0.75m wide and 0.25m deep. This excavation, un-noted elsewhere but having taken place sometime between 1925 and 1963, has exposed the cairn's stony composition. About 35 stones are scattered mainly along this trench, others perhaps denoting the remains of a kerb.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric funerary practises. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
