Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a compact enclosed hut-circle settlement, which probably dates from the Iron Age or Romano-British period (c.800 BC - AD 400). The site comprises the foundations of three hut-circles, with fragments of associated banks, and the partial remains of an enclosure which probably originally encompassed the entire settlement.
The site represents an unusual survival of a prehistoric domestic settlement in an area which has been subject to relatively intensive agricultural improvement and where a lack of building stone has resulted in construction from less permanent materials. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement practices. It is an important relic of the prehistoric landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of environmental and structural evidence, including preserved internal and external floor levels. Waterlogging on the site suggests the possibility of surviving organic materials. The importance of this site is further increased by the presence of remains of a similar settlement 100m to the west (CN212) with which it could have been contemporary, or even connected.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
