Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of a rectangular hut which probably dates to the medieval period. It measures 10m by 7m, is constructed from stone boulders and stands up to 1m high. The hut has two parallel entrances roughly central on the longer sides, suggesting that it could have had an internal cross-passage and was probably divided into two rooms. The hut is situated on an earth platform dug into the natural slope of the ground. The hut may have been associated with the nearby enclosure at Pant Sychbank, perhaps through re-use as a stock pen.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument forms an important element within the wider prehistoric/medieval context and the scheduled area may be expected to contain a wide range of archaeological information, including chronological detail and evidence in regard to construction techniques and agricultural methods. Rectangular huts may be part of a larger cluster of settlement and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
