Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Monument. The monument comprises the remains of four cairns, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The cemetery is situated within rough pasture and located on the summit and W-facing slopes of Carn Fflur. The easternmost cairn (Item 'A') is circular on plan and measures c. 25m in diameter and a maximum of 2m in height. Item 'B' is located c. 360m to the W. It is circular on plan and measures c. 25m in diameter and a maximum of 1.6m in height. Item 'C' is located c. 180m to the NNW. It is oval on plan and measures c. 11m in diameter and a maximum of 0.5m in height. The westernmost cairn (Item 'D') is located c. 225m to the WSW. It is circular on plan and measures c. 16m in diameter and a maximum of 0.5m in height. This cairn is enclosed by a bank measuring 34m in diameter, 0.75m in height and 1 - 1.5m in width. Items 'A', 'B' and 'C' have been disturbed slightly, perhaps indicating antiquarian investigation or robbing. Despite this disturbance, the cairns remain substantially intact and well defined. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are important relics of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The importance of the monument is further enhanced by the group value formed by the association of the individual cairns within the cemetery. The scheduled areas comprise the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. Areas A and B, centred on Items A and B respectively, are circular and measure 35m in diameter. Area C, centred on Item C, is circular and measures 20m in diameter. Area D, centred on Item D, is circular and measures 40m in diameter.
