The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument consists of a free standing cross probably dating to the early medieval or medieval period, which stands in the graveyard 9m south of the church. In total the cross and the associated steps beneath reach 4.5m in height. Mounted on the steps is a 2m high pillar itself standing on a square base; the top portion of this base is chamfered. On top of the pillar is a Gothic sculpture which is roughly rectangular, 0.6m high and 0.3m wide. On each side of the sculpture are carved scenes each set beneath a Gothic cartouche: the west side has the crucifixion, the east side Mary holding the dead Jesus, on the south side is a figure, and on the north side is a further figure which is headless. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of Christianity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A cross may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
