The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument consists of an inscribed stone, a commemorative monument in the form of a stone which has been inscribed with symbols, probably dating to the medieval period. The stone is located in the porch on the S side of the church, on its W wall. It is rectangular, 1.8m high and 0.2m wide. At the top is a rectangular panel of carved decoration in a double beaded quadruple triangular pattern below which is vertical lettering reading RVGNIATIO(S) FILI VENDONI. The memorial stone is thought to be 5th/6th century in date, with the top panel of decoration added in the 7th-9th centuries. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of medieval Christianity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. An inscribed stone may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
