Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument comprises the remains of a pair of predominantly earthen built round barrows, which probably date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). They are located on a gentle valley slope overlooking the Afon Rheidol to the NW. The SE barrow (Item 'A') is circular in shape on plan and measures c. 10m in diameter. It has a rounded profile and measures c. 0.8m in height. Item 'B' is located c. 50m to the NW. It is oval in shape on plan and measures 9.5m N-S by 7.5m transversely. It is rounded in profile and measures 0.7m in height. The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. The barrows are part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance is further enhanced by their group value. Item 'A' was originally scheduled in 1931. The schedule entry has been revised to include a neighbouring barrow (Item 'B'). The two areas to be scheduled comprise the remains described and areas around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. The scheduled areas are circular in shape on plan and measure 25m in diameter.
