Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument consists of an inscribed stone, a commemorative monument probably dating to the 5th or 6th century AD. The stone stands on the summit of a slight rounded rise in the centre of a field, the remains of a mill-mound which was largely removed c.1800. The stone is roughly quadrilateral, 0.75m by 0.6m in section and 1.45m high. The inscription, in two vertical lines of debased Roman capitals, reads CORBALENGI IACIT / ORDOUS. This translates as (The stone of) Corbalengus. (Here) he lies, an Ordovician. This is of particular interest in showing that pre-Roman and Roman tribal divisions survived into the sub-Roman period.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of medieval Christianity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. An inscribed stone may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
