Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the scheduled monument.
The monument consists of a linear earthwork, or dyke, a substantial bank and ditch forming a major boundary between two adjacent landholdings. Most date from the later prehistoric or Early Medieval period. It comprises a bank and ditch constructed across a ridge between 2 small streams. On the south side of the road which cuts the dyke the bank has been much reduced by ploughing in the past and is not well-preserved. The north section also runs through pasture, but is better preserved and stands to a height of c. 1.0m, with ditch on E, c. 1.0m deep in parts.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric/medieval defensive organisation and settlement. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A linear earthwork may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
