Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead.
It forms a square moated site in the flood plain of the Afon Vyrnwy, north of the village of Meifod. The internal platform measures 24m N-S x 28m E-W, and there is a causeway entrnace on the SE side. Earthworks in the surrounding pasture may reflect associated drains or other structural remains. The church in Meifod was once the burial place of the princes of Powys. Placename evidence suggests the site may have contained the residnce of the medieval parson.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact archaeological deposits and structural evidence.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
