Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The monument comprises the remains of an earthwork enclosure and associated structures, including roundhouses, and defensive and agricultural structures. Excavations between 1980 and 1982 showed the enclosure to have been first constructed between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, the Iron Age. The enclosure was reduced in size in the 1st century BC, but occupation continued until at least the 4th cenury AD (Romano-British). A 15th century (medieval) corn-drying kiln was also located within the earlier defenses.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.
