Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The monument comprises the remains of an earthen built round barrow, which probably dates to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC). The barrow measures circa 17m in diameter and survives to an approximate height of 2.3m. A hollow across the top of the barrow suggests that the barrow may have been investigated in antiquity. An OS pillar is located on the top of the mound.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The features are an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retain significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of both intact ritual and burial deposits, together with environmental and structural evidence. Barrows may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value. Situated at a height of 326m OD, the barrow commands extensive 360° view of the surrounding landscape including prehistoric funerary monuments CM090, CM091, CM092, CM105, CM106, CM109 and CM318.
