Description

Summary Description and Reason for Designation
The following provides a general description of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The monument consists of the remains of a Roman settlement, known about since the 16th century. Casual findings and small scale excavations indicate that the remains are extensive and in places substantial. Site A, the playing fields, is the main undeveloped area and the site of various 19th C finds and Site B is important, being the last site available on the street frontage, which follows Offa's Dyke. A 'hypocaust' was found here in 1870. The monument is of national importance as it retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. The structure itself may be expected to contain archaeological information concerning chronology and building techniques. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
